about

Rafael Carvalho

In the Azores the Viola has always been an instrument of socialization, gathering the community and entertaining the evenings spent in family.
In all the Azorean houses you could find a Viola carefully laid on a bedspread for both decoration and safe keeping. Musicians could be found sitting on the doorway, with a corn leaf cigarette on the corner of his mouth playing Bela Aurora, Sapateia, Saudade or Pezinho.

The importance of this instrument transcends the ability of its performer. As often portrayed in the paintings of Domingos Rebelo, this instrument represents the identity of the Azorean people.

The Portuguese word Saudade can’t be translated. Its meaning refers to the feeling of missing something, someone or somewhere.

This feeling is very familiar to the Azorean people and we can find it represented in the two hearts of the Viola da Terra: a heart that stayed and a heart that left, linked by an umbilical cord (the strongest connection that exists) and ending on a tear – the tear of Saudade.

The Viola da Terra, being a traditional instrument, lost some expression over time. In the present day, the Viola is reappearing, trying to regain its space on the cultural identity of the Azoreans.

The album Origens (in English Origins or Roots), by Rafael Carvalho, pays tribute to the traditional themes and techniques, but also brings the Viola to present times, introducing original themes for the first time in the history of the instrument.
